1. What is the rationale for implementing charged parking in the gardens?

Over the years, demand for parking space has risen in tandem with the need for more garden space to house expanding botanical research, outreach programmes and recreational needs.

In order to optimise land use, charged parking is being introduced to moderate demand for car parks as well as to manage vehicle usage and traffic flow within the gardens.

2. When will the charged parking system be implemented?

The implementation date is 1 July 2006. However, during the introductory period from 1 – 9 July, visitors will enjoy complimentary parking.

3. What are the operational hours for charged parking?

Operational hours for charged parking will be from 7am to 10.30 pm.

However, the car park will be open from 5 am to 12 mn.

4. Who will have to pay for parking in the Gardens?

Everyone who uses the car parks within the Gardens from 7 am to
10.30 pm  will have to pay for parking.

5. My family and I enjoy spending our weekends at the Gardens, often spending up to half a day each time we are here.  Now that there is charged parking, how are we to relax and enjoy nature without having to worry about car park fees that await us when we leave?

We understand that the Gardens is a popular venue for families to recreate and have kept the rates affordable with the first hour free between 11 am to 5 pm.

There is also a $2 maximum cap for entry between 7 pm to 10.30 pm.

6. Parks and Gardens should be free and that includes parking. What is the rationale for implementing charged parking?

Singapore is fortunate to have many parks and gardens free for everyone to enjoy and relax.

However, the demand for car parks has risen and building more car parks to meet the demand would mean sacrificing precious garden land.

Charged parking is implemented to moderate parking demand as well as allow more park users to make use of the limited parking lots.

7. Can visitors to the Gardens purchase season passes?

Season passes will not be available due to limited parking lots and the large number of visitors the Gardens receives.

8. Some public car parks start charging after 7.30 am.  The Gardens starts charging at 7am.  Can you look into charging from a later time?

Park users start to visit the Gardens when it opens at 5am with demand peaking at 7am.

Commencing the charging at 7am will help to regulate short-term parking demand and ensure that park users need not wait too long for a parking lot.

9. The government has been promoting pro-family activities and the value of spending time together as a family.  Hence, going to a park would seem the most natural thing to do.  Would charged parking be going against such policy?

Entry to the Gardens will remain free.

However, charged parking is necessary to moderate parking demand as the car parks at the Gardens during peak hours and weekends are most heavily utilised.

A charging system will improve vehicular turnover and allow more park users to use the limited parking lots.

10. How does the car parking system work?

With the exception of the car park at EcoGarden (off Cluny Park Road), the car parks within the Gardens are installed with a system which utilises the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) technology.

The car park at EcoGarden will have a CashCard system.

11. Will I be charged if I drop off my passenger at the Gardens?

A 15-minute grace period is given for picking up and dropping off passengers at all car parks.

Beyond the grace period, parking charges will apply from the time of entry.

No grace period is given at the car parks located at Bukit Timah during ERP period, unless entry and exit are via the Bukit Timah Road gantry within 15 minutes.

12. I ride a motorcycle to the Gardens, do I have to pay for parking?

Currently, motorcycles may enter all car parks without charge.

13. Will there be free parking for taxis and goods vehicles?

Goods vehicles (Y and G-plates), taxis and buses will be charged in all car parks with a grace entry period of up to 30 minutes.

Beyond the grace period, parking charges will apply from time of entry.
