Botany
Centre
The Botany Centre at
the southern end of the Gardens is where the Gardens
was established in 1859. The redevelopment of
this core has the prime objective of rejuvenating
the Gardens as a botanical institution and visitor
destination to this end of the Gardens.
The complex houses new facilities for education
and research including laboratories and buildings
to house the heritage collections of the herbarium
and library. New landscape features added
include the Saraca Stream Walk, displaying fine
examples of tropical flora, the green pavilion
with its landscaped pitched roof, vertical green
walls, sculptures and water features.
Enhanced visitor amenities include a new entrance
plaza, a basement car park, a food garden and
a Public Reference Centre at the Library of Botany
and Horticulture. The latter provides visitor
access to reference materials that include, books,
magazines, CDs as well as herbarium specimens.
Ridley Hall built in 1883 and Holtum Hall in 1920,
are historical buildings that have been retained
and refurbished.
