The Past, Present and Future of Flora Malesiana

The Flora Malesiana Symposium is an important platform for the exchange of taxonomic and systematic ideas and new research findings on the flora of the Malesian region. The eighth Flora Malesiana Symposium will be held in Singapore from 23 to 27 of August 2010, and hosted by the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Together with the Flora Malesiana Foundation, the Singapore Botanic Gardens welcomes you all to attend the symposium in August 2010.

Registration [Registration now closed]:
Due to overwhelming response, the registration for participation at the 8th Flora Malesiana Symposium is now closed.

The registration fee of Sing$300 per participant includes conference materials, proceedings (except for accompanying persons), lunches, welcome and closing dinners, tea/coffee breaks and sightseeing tours.

Please note no refund of payment will be given after 15 May 2010 for withdrawal/cancellation of registration. All payments are to be made in Singapore dollars before the start of the Symposium on Aug. 23 by credit card (Visa or Mastercard), cash, or bankers draft. We regret that personal cheques cannot be accepted.

Tour package 1 (9am to 2 pm) - Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. See the largest patch of primary forest left in Singapore. Lunch and walk-about at Tekka Market (near the Little India).
Tour package 2 (9am to 2 pm) - Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. See the mangrove biotic community in Singapore, its rich flora and fauna. Lunch at Bollywood Veggies, a well known organic farm in Singapore and mini tour within the premise.

Language:
The official language for the symposium is English.
   
Guidelines for Oral & Poster Presentations:

The Organizing Committee reserves the right to decide whether the presentation will be in oral or poster format.

Oral presenters must provide one day before their presentation a power point file saved in a thumb drive/ CD/ DVD to the Secretariat office (Meeting Room 1, Level 3, Botany Centre) for prior installation. No oral presentation will be scheduled unless the registration fees have been paid in full. Each presenter has 15 min (inclusive of Q & A) to present.

Poster presentations should be printed as A1 size (594 x 841 mm). Display boards and velcro tapes will be provided at the symposium site. Posters will be displayed at the Gardens' Library of Botany and Horticulture. Poster presenters should stand by their posters during the two poster sessions scheduled on Aug. 26 & 27 (Thursday & Friday) to answer questions and for discussion.

   
Submisssion Of Manuscripts For The Proceedings:

The proceedings of 8th Flora Malesiana Symposium will be published in the Gardens' Bulletin Singapore (GBS). Manuscript preparation should follow instructions to authors printed in the latest volume of the GBS. Final manuscripts must be submitted, for publication consideration, in two 'hard'/printed copies, including any tables and figures (the latter referring to photographs, line-illustrations, maps, and graphs presented as complete, final compositions), as well as in electronic form as a digital file, to the Editor, Gardens' Bulletin Singapore, Singapore Botanic Gardens, 1 Cluny Road, Singapore 259569 (E-mail: gbs@nparks.gov.sg) by 30 Sept 2010 at the latest. The GBS prefers digital versions be saved as Word 97-2003 documents or earlier (.doc files), as Word 2007 may not be fully stable across some editing platforms. Black-and-white line drawings should be scanned at 600 dpi and photographs at 300 dpi. Following manuscript review, corresponding authors will be duly informed of both reviewers' comments and journal's acceptance. COPYRIGHT. Please note that by submitting a manuscript for publication in the GBS, authors agree that copyright to the entire manuscript accepted for publication is transferred to the Singapore Botanic Gardens / GBS. Authors who require special permission for reproduction of material should first obtain written permission to use such material in their manuscripts meant for publication in the GBS.

   
Financial Support:
The Symposium, with help from the Flora Malesiana Foundation in the Netherlands, offers partial financial subsidy to selected participants to attend the 8th Flora Malesiana meeting. The subsidy can be used to pay the registration fees, return airfare and/or, in part, the hotel accommodation in Singapore. Successful applicants must go to the Secretariat office (Meeting Room 1, Level 3, Botany Centre) on the first day of the symposium to show their passport identity and get the cash award. Excursion 3 - A Botanical Visit to Mt. Kinabalu and Poring Hot Springs in Sabah of Eastern Malaysia

Mt. Kinabalu is the highest mountain in SE Asia rising to a height of more than 4,000 m. The mountain exhibits zonation from lowland rainforest, montane rainforest to alpine parkland. The five-day visit to Mt. Kinabalu Park will allow the participant to hike up to the summit of the mountain in a two-day and one-night journey and witness the vast plant diversity, including numerous local endemic vascular and non-vascular plants. Plants of southern hemisphere or Gondwana affinity found on Mt. Kinabalu are many. There is a possibility to see the magnificent flower of Rafflesia at Poring Hot Springs. Limited collections of botanical specimens for herbarium documentation outside protected areas are possible. The entire trip including the vehicle transport, hotel accommodation, meals and tour guide fees cost SGD$650 per person tentatively. Participants need to book their own return flight from Singapore to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah on the specified date to join the guided botanical tour.
   
Passport & Visa:
A valid passport is required for travel to Singapore. Participants from US, UK and most European countries, as well as ASEAN member countries, are exempted from visa entry requirement. Please contact the Embassy or Consulate of Singapore in your respective country for more details.

Late Payment Of Registration Fees & Symposium Programme Booklet:

A table will be set up for late payment of registration fees at the Green Pavilion, Botany Centre on 22 August (Sunday) from 2 to 6 pm, and also on 23 August (Monday) from 8 to 10 am.

Participants will receive a symposium souvenir bag that contains a copy of symposium programme/abstract booklet and also complimentary copies of the latest issue of the Gardens' Bulletin Singapore journal and Gardenwise magazine. Participants are welcome to visit the Botany Centre in the afternoon of Aug 22 (Sunday) to collect the souvenir bag.
