Flower Park Kagoshima, situated at the southern extremity of the Japanese mainland, is one of the largest botanical gardens in the country. The gardens feature some 400,000 plants consisting of 2,400 varieties that include tropical and sub-tropical plants from around the world and also representative Japanese plants such as azaleas, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and lilies. At the park, you can also see palm trees and orchids donated by the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

At the 4th Global Botanic Gardens Congress in Dublin in June, BGCI launched an internet campaign 'Plants for the Planet'. This campaign is concentrating on raising public awareness to the issues of plant extinctions and plant species diversity loss, and then inspiring as many people as possible around the world to sign up to this campaign before the UN biodiversity summit in Japan this October.
